Recognized as a leader in the fight against malnutrition, Action Against Hunger works to save the lives of malnourished children while providing communities with sustainable access to safe water and long-term solutions to hunger. With 30 years of expertise in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster, and chronic food insecurity, we run life-saving programs in more than 40 countries, benefiting some five million people each year.
In 2009, Action Against Hunger found some of the highest rates of acute malnutrition it has ever seen in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We worked with local health authorities to treat more than 10,000 children facing starvation in the remote southern reaches of the country, where life-threatening malnutrition is rampant among young children.
Rich in diamonds, gold, and nickel, the country has long depended on the extractive industry. But when the global economic recession caused the price of minerals to plummet, mining companies across D.R. Congo closed, and hundreds of thousands of workers were laid off. Already reeling from years of conflict, which continues to ravage parts of the country, many families were forced to eke out a meager living on their land and are struggling to survive.
Thanks to the generous support of individuals, Action Against Hunger's rapid response in the D.R. Congo has saved thousands of lives. And we are working to help families get a new start with seeds and tools, training in agricultural techniques to improve productivity, and access to activities that will generate income well into the future.
